I grew up in Michigan as part of a family of gardeners. At an early age I learned to appreciate the flowers and animals around me and they were the first subjects for my paintings. I attended Western Michigan University, the University of Montevallo in Alabama, Southwestern Michigan College and graduated from Indiana University in South Bend. While attending IU I was introduced to gouache and was soon using it as my main medium as I began my Natural Science Illustration career. My images have appeared on murals, puzzles, prints, housewares, garden flags, greeting cards, books and magazines. My work is very detailed and my paintings often depict a range of plants and animals that coexist in a specific ecosystem.
I'm active in our local Art Association and teach painting botanicals, birds and animals in gouache at the Buchanan Art Center. Many of my days are spent tramping through the fields with my dog, Callie, looking for new subjects for my paintings.
